    How I Work

A supportive, collaborative approach to therapy

Reaching out to a psychologist for support is not a small step. It often takes courage and honesty to acknowledge that something isn’t working and that you’d like help navigating it.

As a telehealth clinical psychologist working with adults and couples across Australia, I focus on thoughtful, evidence-based therapy that helps you understand patterns, develop practical strategies, and create meaningful change.

Therapy is rarely a straight line. It can involve difficult conversations, new insights, and gradual change. With consistency and the right support, however, it can also be deeply worthwhile.

What does the therapy or counselling journey look like?

Step 1 – Your First Session

The first session is about working out whether I’m the right psychologist for you. You’ll get a sense of my style and approach, and whether you feel comfortable speaking openly with me.

Feeling safe and understood is essential. Therapy is most effective when trust is established, so we take time to ensure the space feels respectful, supportive, and collaborative.

I’ll ask questions to better understand you and how you experience the world. From there, therapy is tailored to your personality, goals, and the specific issues you’d like to address.

    Step 2 – Exploration

As therapy progresses, we begin to explore patterns, experiences, and challenges in more depth.

Between sessions, you may be invited to reflect on certain situations, practise new strategies, or notice patterns in thoughts, emotions, or relationships. Some people call this homework; I think of it as integrating therapy into real life.

Clients who attend consistently and engage with this process often notice change more quickly and feel more empowered in their progress.

    Step 3 – Going Deeper

People are layered and complex. Like peeling back the layers of an onion, therapy sometimes involves gently uncovering deeper issues that sit beneath more visible concerns.

This process happens at a pace that feels manageable for you. There is no pressure to rush or revisit experiences before you feel ready.

    Step 4 – Understanding

A key part of therapy is developing a clearer understanding of yourself - how you think, feel, relate, and respond to the world.

With increased insight comes choice. Understanding what drives certain reactions or patterns can make it easier to respond differently, make changes, and approach challenges with greater self-compassion.

    Step 5 – Flexibility

Therapy needs to fit into real life.

Sessions are scheduled collaboratively, and you decide how often you’d like to attend. Some people prefer weekly sessions, while others attend fortnightly, monthly, or more flexibly depending on their needs and circumstances.

Telehealth counselling allows sessions to take place wherever you are in Australia, without the added stress of travel.

    Step 6 – You’re in control

You are always in control of the therapeutic process.

I don’t believe in forcing people to talk about experiences or topics they’re not ready to explore. Your autonomy and sense of safety are central to effective therapy.

We work together, with you in the driver’s seat, and therapy progresses at a pace that feels right for you.
