    Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Evidence-based relationship counselling grounded in the Gottman Method

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a research-based approach to relationship counselling designed to help couples improve communication, strengthen emotional connection, and better understand patterns that contribute to conflict or disconnection.

As a Certified Gottman Therapist, I work with couples who are seeking clarity, repair, or deeper understanding within their relationship. Therapy is structured, evidence-based, and tailored to the unique dynamics of each couple.

What is Gottman Method of Couples Therapy?

Gottman Method of Couples Therapy was developed by John Gottman and Julie Schwartz Gottman following more than four decades of scientific research with thousands of couples.

This approach focuses on understanding relationship patterns, strengthening friendship and intimacy, improving conflict management, and increasing shared meaning. Interventions are grounded in empirical research rather than intuition or opinion.

The Gottman Method is widely recognised as one of the most extensively researched and effective approaches to couples therapy.

How Gottman Method Couples Therapy works

Gottman Method Couples Therapy begins with a through and structured assessment of the couple. Kerri does this assessment in one day. This assessment forms the clinical foundation for all ongoing couples therapy work.

The assessment process allows for a comprehensive understanding of the relationship, ensuring that therapy is focused, transparent, and clinically appropriate from the outset.

    New Couples Assessment Day

The New Couples Assessment Day is the first step in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. It is a standalone assessment process designed to determine therapeutic goals, identify relationship strengths and challenges, and assess suitability for ongoing couples therapy.

    The assessment day involves:

    • Completion of the Gottman Relationship Check-up questionnaire
    • Two joint couples sessions
    • One individual session with each partner

The assessment day typically runs from 8:00am to approximately 3:00pm, with a one-hour break in the middle of the day.

    History of the Gottman Method

The Gottman Method was developed through decades of longitudinal research, observational studies, and clinical work with couples. Its principles and interventions are now used internationally and continue to be refined through ongoing research.
