Learn more about Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT

    COGNITIVE BEHAVIOUR THERAPY (CBT)

Evidence-based treatment for anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues

    What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy or CBT is a leading treatment approach in Australia for a range of mental and emotional health issues including anxiety and depression. In short, CBT is a technique to help people find new thought patterns that will also improve actions and feelings.

    How does CBT work?

To put it simply, CBT connects thoughts with behaviour and emotions. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is based upon the idea that our thoughts are the cause of our feelings and behaviour, not external events like people or situations.

CBT encourages people to examine their unhelpful thoughts and behaviours and develop new healthy thought patterns and behaviours. More than 1,000 research studies across the globe have demonstrated the effectiveness of CBT for treating a variety of mental health issues including:

    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • Eating disorders
    • Phobias
    • OCD
    • Insomnia

    Short history of CBT

Cognitive behaviour therapy or CBT was developed by Dr Aaron Beck in the 1960s to treat depression. He discovered that people struggling with depression experienced a series of negative thoughts, called automatic thoughts. Helping clients identify and evaluate these automatic thoughts resulted in improved emotional and mental well-being.
